What You Can Do to Better Protect Yourself from Fraud

With the rise in fraudulent communications, it’s important to stay alert. Scammers are using increasingly clever tactics to try and trick you into sharing personal information. They study your habits, pretend to be trusted organizations, and use urgent language in hopes of making you react quickly. These messages often feel real and convincing, but they’re designed to catch you off guard.

While fraud can feel overwhelming, there are practical steps you can take to safeguard yourself and your finances.

Simple Steps to Protect Yourself

  • Look closely at sender details: Always check if the sender’s name matches their email address or phone number. If something seems off, trust your instincts and investigate further.
  • Pause and consider: If you weren’t expecting to receive a message, especially one that asks you to act quickly, click a link, or provide sensitive info, take a step back before responding.
  • Verify through trusted channels: If you get an alert about your account, don’t use links or phone numbers from emails or texts. Instead, log in through your bank’s official app or website, or find the contact number yourself.
  • Keep your information private: A legitimate financial institution will never ask for your passwords, digital banking codes, or login details via phone, text, or email. If someone does, end the conversation.
  • Reach out if unsure: If anything feels suspicious, call the company directly using the contact information listed on their official website. Never use the contact information provided in a questionable message.

Taking these steps may only require a moment of thought, but they make a big difference in protecting your accounts and your peace of mind. When you pause and think before acting, you help create a safer community for everyone. Remember, you're not alone: Capital Credit Union is always here to support you and answer your questions.
