Credit Union Launches Holiday Outreach

Kimberly, WI — The public is invited to join Capital Credit Union in sharing and caring for people in our local communities during "Christmas With Capital," taking place now through December 31. Capital members and community residents can participate in three easy ways:

"Giving trees" - Choose a tag from a Capital Giving Tree at any Capital office. Giving Trees are decorated with tags listing clothing items for children and adults as well as household items like sheets and towels. To participate, simply select a tag, purchase the item listed (may be new or "gently used"), then drop off the unwrapped item at any Capital office by December 31, 2008. Donated items will go to the Community Clothes Closet in Appleton.

Holiday money gift envelopes - Available for a donation of 25¢ each or five for $1.00. Available through December 26, the gift envelopes come in four festive designs and are a decorative way to "wrap" cash or checks for holiday gift-giving while giving to a good cause.

Cash donations will also be accepted at all Capital offices.

All gift envelope proceeds and cash donations will benefit the following area charities:
• Candlelight Vision Corporation (respite care for younger teens)
• Hmong-American Partnership
• Multiple Sclerosis Wisconsin Chapter
• Winnebago County Literacy Council

According to Capital's President and CEO Alan Zierler "Christmas With Capital" was started several years ago as a way to live out Capital's mission of being a positive and active role model in the communities they serve.

"This is a unique program that offers our members and others in the community the opportunity to give back to their communities," said Zierler. "Traditionally the holidays are a time of gift giving and cheer. However there are many whose lives and economic circumstances have changed drastically this year due to job losses or layoffs.

The goal of Christmas With Capital is to help make Christmas a little merrier for those in need by sharing what we can. Each donation counts, no matter how big or small. This is our chance to live out the spirit of the season by making a difference in the lives of our neighbors and other area families."

Capital Credit Union Announces Scholarship Program

Kimberly, WI — Capital Credit Union in Kimberly is now accepting applications for their 2008-2009 Scholarship Program which will award a total of $7,000 in scholarships ($1,000 each) to seven area high school seniors. Capital's Scholarship Program is open to graduating high school seniors who are enrolled to attend an accredited post-secondary institution and are Capital members living in Outagamie, Calumet, Winnebago, or Brown counties. Scholarship application packets are available online at capitalcu.com, at eligible high school guidance offices and at all 12 Capital Credit Union offices. Completed applications must be received at a Capital office by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 6, 2009.

An active supporter of education, Capital Credit Union partners with several area school districts to teach financial literacy, at the elementary level in Little Chute and Menasha, and at Kimberly High School as part of the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE). Post-secondary education is an important value for the credit union as it usually translates to better paying jobs and higher earnings for younger members in the future, as Capital's President and CEO Alan Zierler explains.

"Statistics show a strong correlation between post-secondary education levels and higher salaries in the job market," Zierler said. "Investing in the scholarship of our youth today is an investment in the future of our communities. Especially in today's changing economic environment, a two or four-year degree can greatly increase one's lifetime earning power and improve quality of life."

Scholarship winners will be selected by a committee made up of Capital employees and a Capital board member using a system that rates community involvement, scholastic achievement, community and school activities, a written essay and other criteria. Last year's winners were chosen from among 55 applicants attending area high schools.

Kiddie Karnival Teaches Kids About Money

Kimberly, WI — More than 100 children ages 12 and younger and their parents learned about money while having fun during Capital's Critters 2nd Annual Kiddie Karnival, Saturday, October 4 held at Capital's Eisenhower Drive office in Kimberly.

Capital's Money Smart Week kick-off event, the "Road to Riches Adventure" also served as a morning birthday treat for eight-year-old Riley Knaack and his four-year-old brother Carter, both of whom share an October 4 birthday. Capital employee grandma Ann Knaack and her husband, grandpa Jack, brought the boys to the carnival as a fun way to start the day.

"They had a ball," Knaack said. "They just couldn't wait. They kept asking, 'What's next, what's next? Their favorite game was digging in the sand looking for coins," Knaack said.

During the carnival children "earned" play coins while following a giant game board marked by "critter" foot prints. Stops along the way included several games like "Pin the Tail on the Pig," the "Cash Cow Toss" (beanbag throw), the "Milk Money" game and more, all designed to help kids explore smart ways to earn, save and manage their money. At the end of the game kids could spend their earnings on prizes, deposit them into a Capital savings account, or do some of both.

A second year event, attendance for the Kiddie Karnival more than doubled this year, and approximately 30 Capital employees volunteered their time to make the event happen.
